ATTACKS ON ADDO ARE TOO MUCH – KONADU

The head coach of Premier League side Wa All Stars, Maxwell Konadu has described criticism of Local Black Stars coach Herbert Addo as being ‘over the top.’ He told footyghana.com that even though Addo has to shoulder some blame for Ghana’s dismal performance at the ongoing Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament in Sudan, critics have resorted to what he referred to as personal and insulting attacks on Addo’s person. Konadu, who is also the assistant coach of Ghana’s Olympic team, the Black Meteors, says that the argument that Addo’s performance in Sudan shows that local coaches are not up to it is flawed. He said, ‘Even though Herbert did not do well, we cannot use this as a basis to condemn local coaches. Another local coach could have done things differently.’ The former national striker suggested that a different formation could have helped the Local Black Stars in Sudan. ‘In coaching, the 4-3-3 system is used as a last resort these days. You either play with one or two strikers on top and that gives you security because your opponent will find it difficult to score against you. In our case, the formation meant that we were forced to kick long balls from defence to the attack, negating the midfield area. When that goes on, the team tires quickly and that is why we lost.’ Konadu also told footyghana.com that he had, together with his head coach David Duncan had received messages of encouragement from well meaning individuals following Ghana’s elimination from CHAN 2011 and the savage criticisms that followed. The Black Meteors are in camp, currently preparing for an All African games qualifier against Sudan.
